FADA Releases July’26 Vehicle Retail Data

BusinessK Puspa06 Aug 2026

Aug 6: The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations released vehicle retail data for July 2026, highlighting a historic milestone for the Indian automobile industry. For the first time since records began, all six vehicle categories—Two-Wheelers, Three-Wheelers, Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Tractors, and Wheeled Construction Equipment—registered their highest-ever July retail sales, underlining the resilience of domestic demand and the strength of India's automotive market.

FADA Releases July’26 Vehicle Retail Data

Overall vehicle retail sales stood at 25,91,138 units, registering 25.89% year-on-year growth while remaining largely stable on a month-on-month basis. The month ranked as the 12th-highest retail month out of the 151 months tracked by FADA since January 2014 despite being a monsoon-heavy, seasonally softer period. Growth was broad-based across all vehicle categories.

Commenting on the performance, Mr. Sai Giridhar, Vice President, FADA, said:

"July 2026 has etched itself into Indian Auto Retail history—for the first time on record, every single category posted its best-ever July. The industry retailed 25,91,138 units, up 25.89% year-on-year, with growth driven by GST 2.0-led affordability, improved retail finance availability, favourable festival timing, and the structural strength of the India Growth Story. A significant trend emerging from the month is the rapid rise of alternative fuel vehicles, which are now approaching petrol's market share in the passenger vehicle segment."

Category-wise Performance

Two-Wheeler retail sales reached 18,18,289 units, growing 28.25% year-on-year and marking the first time July sales crossed the 18-lakh mark. Commercial Vehicle retail sales rose 24.04% to 99,666 units, while Passenger Vehicle sales crossed the four-lakh milestone for the first time in July at 4,16,555 units, recording 19.13% growth. Three-Wheelers registered 16.16% growth, Tractors surged 28.10%, and Wheeled Construction Equipment recorded the highest growth among all categories at 46.07% year-on-year.

Electric Vehicle Adoption Accelerates

Electric vehicle adoption continued to gather pace during July. Total EV retail sales touched an all-time monthly high of 3,27,901 units, taking overall EV penetration to approximately 12.7%, up from 9.6% a year ago. The two-wheeler EV segment achieved a record market share of 11.24%, while commercial vehicle EV penetration also reached an all-time high. In the passenger vehicle segment, alternative fuel vehicles—including CNG, Hybrid and EV models—accounted for 40.59% of total retail sales, narrowing the gap with petrol vehicles to just 1.09 percentage points.

Inventory and Market Outlook

FADA noted that passenger vehicle inventory increased to 33–35 days, remaining significantly above its recommended benchmark of 21 days. The association urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches more closely with retail demand to prevent dealer inventory from rising further during the festive stocking season.

Dealer Sentiment Remains Strong

Dealer confidence strengthened considerably heading into August. According to FADA's survey, 74.30% of dealers expect market growth during August, while 87.85% anticipate growth over the August–October festive quarter, marking the strongest three-month outlook recorded in recent surveys. Key demand drivers include Independence Day launches, Onam, Raksha Bandhan, recovering rural cash flows, and a favourable base effect.

FADA cautioned that elevated passenger vehicle inventory, crude oil and currency volatility, and the eventual pace of festive demand conversion will remain important factors to monitor. Nevertheless, supported by GST 2.0 affordability, stable interest rates, improving monsoon conditions and continued infrastructure investments, the association believes the industry's structural growth trajectory remains firmly intact heading into the festive season.
